Lyrics
Things happened so late, I couldn’t wait, I had to go.
You’d do the same thing if you was me, if I were you.
Oh yeh you would baby..
Fast, fast as you can, the story of us pulls out of sight.
The nearest neighbors were a mile away
they couldn’t hear us rock, they couldn’t hear us say
how, how, how, how.
I remember now how it could it could be,
you’re on my mind
you’d do the same too if you were me.
Fast, fast, fast, fast the story of us pulls out of sight
Oh baby please don’t leave me now
the nearest neighbors were a mile away
they couldn’t hear us say how how how how.
I remember now how it could it could be
you’re inside me, in my head.
how how how how.
The nearest neighbors were a mile away.
Fast, fast, fast, fast that’s how you pull,
the story of us out of sight
The nearest neighbors were a mile away.
Driving down the highway, I’m out of the door
I’m looking for adventure while I go to explore…
yeh yeh now I don’t know how.
They couldn’t hear us rock. How How.
When I was in high school we had a band down the street that wrote original music. They were called Free Food. To say each one of those people were an influence on me is huge understatement. I fell so in love with them and playing guitar during that time, that my parents got me one for my 17th birthday, which I immediately began writing songs on. Where those songs came from is a place I still love and cherish today. Because it has nothing to do with me, I knew little about Guitar or songwriting at the time. Of course by now I’m getting better at that part! As time went by, me and my friends stayed in touch through hell and high water, through marriage, divorce, and all things in between. When I got my ranch in 1998 and set up a recording studio, we made plans to have a musical reunion here. That was in 2000. In 2005 we had another one, this song is a result of that reunion. Fred had written a poem on a piece of cardboard and left it at the studio, and some months later I flipped it over and wrote my poem. That was in 2005. In 2018 when we got together, I showed Fred the poem that he had written, and he asked me to find some (3) chords and he’d make a song out of the lyrics. He rejected my cursory chord idea, so I flipped that cardboard over and made something out of the dribblings that I had written. And thus we have THE NEAREST NEIGHBORS were a (Mile Away.) This is my song to my friends, thank you guys for helping me, inspiring me, teaching me and making great music yourselves. God is good. I miss you guys and I hope we meet up again someday. It’s gonna have to be up yonder I’m sure, since some of us have gone on ahead. The story of us pulls out of sight. Love you always, me.
Fire & Rain Keeping on a-prayin.
before things end People will be sayin
you lit the way when the light was fadin
Fire & Rain
Wind and Smoke
Lay down your life before
You go broke.
Lay it on down on the Altar of love
Don’t look back at Lightning above.
When the judgement roars and the storm is blowing
A chorus of angels As big as the ocean
Will usher you through While the door is closing.
This song was inspired by the events of 2017 and 2018, I was so touched by the massive natural disasters and the amazing human compassion that was shown in the aftermath.. Fred and I decided to write together and he had a musical piece, I had the bones of a lyrical idea and theme. I love the lines he added and gave the song a beautiful and hopeful outcome! Find that door!
“Cheers” you say while my world is tumbling down.
“I’m here” you say and I’ll always be around you.
No-one ever lied to me the way you do,
I can’t see you too often-
you put another nail in your coffin.
“You can count on me” and I’m gonna be your man.
“Take a new name, baby” OH and I’ll do the best I can.
No-one ever did this to me before
but you know I can’t see you too often-
I see some nails in that coffin.
I believed in you; and I vowed before The Man.
I took a new name honey and now I gotta give it back.
No-one ever took me to this place before,
until I found out I could soften-
I put another nail in your coffin.
I believed in you Now go your separate way
I don’t need your diamonds I can’t see your face
I figured since Tanya has a D-I-V-O-R-C-E song I should have one too. The boy I married was a friend of friends and we’d been set-up. He seemed perfect, but underneath his smooth exterior was a different person… I loved him with all my heart, but he had to go on his own way. As usual, The Lord made me some lemon-ade out of this trial. Hallelujah! Several remarkable dates associated with this timeline: married 10-10-10, broke up 2-14-11, he left 3-11-11.
Seeds of Abraham, you hold them in your hands
scattered to the land, return unto the lamb.
Take this mustard seed and throw it to the breeze
now walk upon the sea, I am just what i’ll be.
Seeds that tell a story, the hand fits in the glove,
seeds that grow to glory, when planted in your love
Father holy man, your books are in our hands,
your words are in the sand beneath the promise land.
So take your Prophet’s oil, now dig beneath the soil,
for that which shall not spoil, shepherd kings so royal.
Seeds that tell a story, the hand fits in the glove.
Seeds that grow to glory, when planted in your love
Seeds of Abraham, you hold them in your hands
gather to the land, return unto the lamb…
This song is REDO of Seeds of Abraham. Fred asked to redo one of the songs on Prodigal Daughter and this is the one I chose. I picked it because he loves three chord songs and this only had 5, compared to some others that are more complex. I love what he did with the new music and helping arrange the vocals! Turned out pretty cool and stretched my vocal palette into new arenas. Alpha & Omega.
Some days last all day and all night.
The things we say resonate, it’s all wrong it’s all right.
I’m going to go down on my knees talkin’ about a heart attack.
I say what I mean, it goes around and comes back.
Comes back, it’s alright .
Our life’s just like lightning on fire. Our life’s just like lightning’s desire.
Met a boy when I was young ‘neath the trees in my back yard.
The wind was blowing the moon around
I never knew it could be so hard.
I remember when you said I’m gonna take you by the hand.
I will show you everything,
I’ll be the king you be the queen of all we see.
It’s alright
Oh baby I know sometimes we have such a hard life. But I want to give you everything..
I’m gonna bring you so much delight. I was sent from above to love you baby.
So come on over here baby. And take me by the hand. Let’s get it on.
Our life’s just like lightning on fire.
Our life’s just like lightning’s desire. On fire
I suppose in some ways this entire project is a work of gratitude for my friends, an honorarium and a journey into the places and people that I love. The amazing thing is that love is still here in the present and is made full. I feel so blessed the way this project came together without me really thinking about it, it turned out to have a personality and a theme of its own.
Before I moved out of the city, I had a rehearsal studio in Austin Texas. Right before I went sober and started thinking about what the hell I was doing, we used to get in that rehearsal studio, drink a bunch of beer (and whatever) and jam. This song, called LIGHTNING ON FIRE, began as a chord jam with me, Chris Vreeland, and Fred Mitchim. Years later when I moved out to my Ranch and started playing around in my studio, I remembered the cord progression and in the process of jamming around on it came up with this song. This song is about first love, where it takes us, and where it leaves us. I hope y’all enjoy it!
Mexico the turbulent your serpent lies awake.
Your eagle flies thru darkling skies
while all your people sleep.
I could cry for them or I guess I just don’t know.
Here I stand in a foreign land in the Casa de Cambio
These star crossed lovers sat side by side
drinking in the moonlight,
they held hands while she made plans
she was waiting for him to die.
Mexico the remnant within your bosom lies.
Your temples broke, your mountains smoke,
while all your warriors weep.
I could cry with them or I guess I just don’t know.
Here I stand in a foreign land in the Casa de Cambio.
These star crossed lovers sat side by side
drinking in the moonlight,
the old man and the young woman
waiting for him to die.
Mexico, the triumphant are waiting in the wings
You’re waiting for your savior man
to shake you from your sleep.
Oh, I could wait for him or I guess i just won’t go
Here I stand change in hand at the Casa de Cambio
These star crossed lovers sat side by side
drinking in the moonlight
the old man and the young woman
waiting for him to die.
she made a plan for the gringo man
way down in mexico-
way down in mexico-
down in mexico.
Casa de Cambio is what the little huts in Mexico are called, where gringos and natives go to exchange currency. It translates to House of Change in English…. I can’t tell you how much my heart breaks for Mexico and her people. They are undergoing so much upheaval and pain. This is a commentary on the Mexican people who are surely in the grips of massive forces beyond their control.
It’s also a story about my dad who had land in Chapala, I spent 2 years in that town, getting the inheritance for me and my sisters where I met so many kind locals. His ex-girlfriend had a plot to steal what he gave us and because God was merciful, we overcame her, and I have my ranch. Thank you dad, may you rest in peace, thank you Lord for keeping me safe. Praying for Mexico.
Every day we keep on
getting a little closer.
We keep on climbin into the sky
on the wings of the eagle.
Job had a job
he didn’t like it so he wailed.
But he keep on climbin’
higher and higher,
on Jacob’s ladder.
Adam met Eve under
that tree in the garden.
There wasn’t a sound
when the fruitful came
down to the water.
And the water came down
and covered the ground
up to the mountain,
so they built a boat and
hope made it float….
from the fryin’ pan to the fire
How long oh Lord,
how long does it take?
Seems like we been waiting so long.
How long oh Lord, how long does it take
please don’t let me do no more wrong.
The city reborn,
the mountains are torn
down to the sea.
The lines that they laid,
the games that they played
can be seen.
Who’s gonna win and
get past the sin of all this killin?
One was a man and
he couldn’t stand all the others
How long oh Lord, how long does it take?
Seems like we been waiting so long.
How long oh Lord, how long does it take…
please don’t let us do no more wrong.
The city reborn.
The mountains are torn.
He-walks thru the storm
He- walks on the sea, the sea.
Jeshua, Jeshua, Jeshua.
The Frying Pan to the Fire is a classic saying expressing the human condition, just when you think you’re out of the fire and you’re gonna make it, seems life sends you another skillet! This song was inspired due to a friend of mine who consistently had this going on in her life. She was also a Jewish friend and I got the images of all those people in the Bible struggling against impossible odds in the classic stories, and her heritage. It took about a year to find the the chorus but finally I was reading the Psalms one day and I remembered how long Oh Lord, how long. I really had fun with the bluesy chorus and the lead guitar!
Bring me your bouquet all colorful and radiant
for I had lost my way deep inside this loneliness,
but I am not afraid.
I can let Your empty room be part of me.
Bring me some delight that speaks in joyful eloquence
for I been too estranged life is for the innocent,
but I am not ashamed.
I can let Your elegance be part of me.
Won’t you take me out tonight?
we’ll roll in waves of holiness
for I have had my fill.
we’ll roll out in the fields
we’ll roll down in the deep green grass
and roll that rock away
from the door of everything.
Lordy roll that rock away
Jesus roll that rock away.
Come to me today
chances are the birds will sing
but oh what does it mean?
I can give You everything
cause now now it’s time to trade.
I can let this renaissance be part of me
I can let this renaissance be part of me.
The Door of Everything came to me while I was getting sober back in 1995! It’s also a result of taking the long walks every night with my little doggie Jodi. Jodi and I would walk for hours and hours all around this beautiful neighborhood with gorgeous lights, gardens and very little traffic. The reason this song has the beat it has is because I got the melody and musical chords from the rhythm that Jodi set and the way she would walk. Between her and my kitty, Minerva, I credit a lot of the changes in my life to these wonderful animals that were my friends. So of course this song is dedicated to Jody Isis Foster. Of course the song also represents when Jesus left the tomb! Roll that rock away, baby roll that rock away! My doggie got her name because I thought she was Egyptian, but she’s actually Japanese. I had her for 18 years and she was my best friend.
He wandered alone all thru time looking to find.
Watching & waiting, dead in the water of earthly design,
deep in his heart, he was not forsaken.
Seeking & searching his body was aching for something divine.
Caught up by choosing, lost in confusion but never denying,
deep in his spirit he knows he was chosen.
He called out alone all thru creation looking for her.
She is his vision, soothing his senses thru curses and lies,
deep in his marrow he knew she was waiting.
CH: At last the reunion – standing besides her.
When the dust meets Your glory, love takes us higher.
Angels are signing, the wedding consuming the last of his cries.
Naming the creatures, dancing beside her rapture and wine,
and deep in the night now she is taken
CH: At last the reunion – standing besides her.
When the dust meets Your glory, love takes us higher.
ADAM was a song I wrote for a man friend of mine who constantly seemed lost. He seemed like he was searching and seeking for some sort of ground that would support him in his lostness. The idea for the song taught me that since Adam met Eve, he has always had that ache in his heart for the perfect love that reflects the love of our Creator, and his plan for a final, and last Adam. This song also held overtones of joy in the reunion, which is why it had the trumpets and the fanfare in the middle of the song announcing the wedding! This song really touches my heart, goes out to all the men out there who know deep down inside that true love is waiting for them. It also goes out as encouragement to all of us who are waiting.
I was leaving Marfa
when I saw the lights
coming oe’r the mountains
in the purple desert night.
Desire burned within me in answer to the sight,
so I pulled on over on highway 99.
The lights they kept on coming, message from the sky,
indians and pilgrims
like ghostly ships pass by.
No one seems to know them
these desert shooting stars,
so i pulled on over and watched them in my car.
What are these lights?
Balmoreah won’t say-
what are these lights?
Chisos don’t know…..
Heading back to Texas to see the lights of Marfa…..
Going back where I belong to see the Marfa lights.
I left out of Marfa,
headed to the east
following a star
map
looking for the King.
The road was long and empty-
a sandy soul surprise
so I pulled on my ray-bans
and headed to the right.
Left in contemplation
of things that I had seen:
motor car elation,
or paintings of the queen?
Of lights and mighty and cactus
all bowing to the Son-
so i pulled on over on
highway Mazatlan.
What are these lights?
Balmoreah won’t say-
what are these lights?
Chisos don’t know…..
Heading back to Texas to see the lights of Marfa…..
Going back where I belong to see the Marfa lights.
Marfa Lights is yet a different songwriters attempt to capture the mystery of the elusive lights. These lights have been seen for millennia in the West Texas outback. The Indians have seen them, pioneers have seen them, they’ve been seen by planes, trains and automobiles. I’ve seen them twice, the first time was a total surprise, the second time I was hoping to affirm the experience. Which I did! The thing I like about this song is I felt like we were able to sonically capture the eerie dark skies, the lonesome, empty spaces between the Chisos Mts. and the far-flung stars that one can see in the desert of West Texas. There’s something very compelling about that area and to this day, truly no one has figured out “what are these lights?” I like the idea of the highway to Matzatlan, as it leads us back thematically to Mexico where it all began for this particular journey. We are looking for the King. (A lot of these themes did not happen on purpose but developed well outside my thinking mind!) Yeeeeee haw
I could write a drinking song,
but I have gone sober.
Or I could write a cheating song,
but I ain’t got no lover.
So you won’t find me in a bar,
crying in my beer-
you will find me on the
banks of River Everclear.
Flowing from a hallowed ground
deep inside our minds,
we can find our destiny
here by this riverside.
You won’t find me in a car
all speeding down the road.
No! you will find me on the shore
and watch the river roll.
Roll on by,
passing me by…
The river keeps on rollin’
yesterday is gone,
the river keeps on coming down
from high up in the clouds.
I could write a leaving song,
but I think I’m gonna stay.
I could be writing all them grieving songs,
but he just won’t go away.
You won’t find me on the run
with some heavy load-
no you will find on the shore
and watch the river roll.
No you won’t find me on the run
from 7 deadly fears-
you will find me on the banks
of
River Everclear.
River Everclear came into being because we only get one radio station here and as I was driving to see my mom at a rest home 75 miles away I got stuck with that one station, which of course is country. KNEL to be specific! I thought to myself, heck I can do this….lol. Not really but here’s my attempt at trying. I am sure you will see the irony! Anyway this is fun song and meant to be fun and just playful.
Seeds of Abraham, you hold them in your hands
scattered to the land, return unto the lamb.
Take this mustard seed and throw it to the breeze
now walk upon the sea, I am just what I’ll be.
Seeds that tell a story, the hand fits in the glove.
Seeds that grow to glory, when planted in your love.
Seeds of Abraham, you hold them in your hands
gather to the land, return unto the lamb.
Aha…..my song I can’t wait to play in Jerusalem. I studied the Bible a lot during my illness and this was one of those real fast songs that just popped. I love the riddims on this….the song was originally recorded in 2002! But we revived those tracks and flew in the percussion and cleaned it up. That’s my idea of playing bass, hey, it is what it is! And I love the Texas/Arabic/Exodus connections! Take your prophet’s oil! And the seeds are everywhere bursting forth now behind the scenes of madness on planet earth. We are returning to the Lamb.
She came into town, lookinʼ for a solution.
She came into her own living on her restitution
Then she went
down, down, down
into the water
and when she came up
she had the sign
of the Prodigal Daughter.
She came into this life screaming
and howling at the moon
she fell into love
but she was singing it all out of tune…
Then she went
down, down, down
into the water
and when she came up
she had the sign
of the Prodigal Daughter.
We didn’t see it coming – it took longer than it seemed.
We listen to immortals – when they’re louder than our dreams
We didnʼt hear that drumbeat – much to our surprise,
the ones who came to get us had fire in their eyes.
She rode out of town headinʼ into the west-
riding the sunset goinʼ back to her rest.
Then she went
down, down, down
into the water
and when she came up
she had the sign
of the Prodigal Daughter.
She went down, down, down into the water.
You go girl you go the sign of the Prodigal Daughter
Down, down, down into the water.
The title track, Prodigal Daughter, is dedicated to my sister, Judith, who we lost to cancer in 2007 on St Paddy’s Day. She was my baby sister and I loved her dearly. When she got into remission the family brought her to Texas so she could get the help she needed. When she got here she stayed with me for about a month and although she was an atheist when she got here, she decided after being around me and my friends that she wanted to get baptized. In retrospect that was fantastic considering that she only lived a few years after that. I wrote the song upon learning she had been diagnosed and it took four years to complete the song, this was not one of the quick songs. And in fact the bridge was not completed until after she died. The song means a lot to me personally and I hope that somehow it bring comfort to others and that maybe she’ll get to hear the finished version someday! I’ll never forget her and my nephew dancing to this song and loving it. I love you Judith, glad you’re home. (She got baptized in my backyard in the River Everclear)
Windy Weather
lightning rides,
feeling all the storms inside-
then He said,
“take My hand and I will
give you the master plan”
Love Love Love is what you need
come to me it’s guaranteed
Love Love Love is here to stay
take My hand, I am the Way.
Children smile
and gather here
blessings for the mother’s tears
then He says,
“hear My Word and you will
see the hummingbird”
Singing…..
Love Love Love is what you need
come to me it’s guaranteed
Love Love Love is here to stay
take my hand, I am the way.
No one here sees past this veil
seen now darkly, vision pale
then he said,
“my Father sees-
put down your yoke and follow me”
Love Love Love is what you need
come to me it’s guaranteed
Love Love Love is here to stay
take my hand, I am the way.
Love love love.
la-la-la
A Song for Jacob, was written the day after I went to a blessing for a redheaded infant named Jacob, here in Castell Texas. As the family was preparing for the blessing and we were waiting for all the people to get there, a huge storm build up from the west that became a tornado. The contrast between the storm, the blessing, the infant, the family and the hummingbirds that hung fed at their porch became inspiration for the song. I wrote the song in oh, about 15 minutes. It seems like some songs are just there waiting for me when I reach the right intersection. I love the message for this song about the love, and Jesus being the way because He is the way. You could also look at this song as a song for Jacob, our spiritual ancestor, who became the patriarch of all the 12 tribes. God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
Firelight, take me dancing
turn me into ashes, I’m
falling down, melting down.
Firelight, take me prancing
shadow of the shadow.
Now the sparks are weaving
visions of tomorrow
without a sound.
Tumble into canyons
bubble from the ground
I am your companion
take me down, take me down. Walking on the fire
now I am the flame,
walking on the water
marching with the Saints.
Firelight take me spinning
shower me with embers
of pagan kings and phoenix things.
Firelight be the answer
dancing round the pyre,
now the sparks are weaving
glimmers in the shadow
of angel wings
so feathery.
Oh when the saints go marching in
you I want to be in that number….
when the saints go marching in,
Saint John
Saint Luke
Saint Paul
Saint Peter…at the pearly gates!
Firewalker is a song that came from me actually walking on Fire back when, due to my Mic Mac Indian roots, I thought I had to do things like that. I like the song because it has the swirl and drama of fire. I like how the flutes and the percussion revolve in a circular and whirling movement. I had an image of the fire- circle and people around the fire seeking warmth and fellowship, as the sparks flew up into the air, I thought I could see the angels watching us, watching out over us. I thought I could see ancient images of all the people down through time, through the ages, kings and creatures, dancers and warriors, mothers and children seeking light and life. In the end, marching with the Saints!
